Lip Blush After Facial Trauma: A Journey of Confidence, Healing & Restoring Lip Definition
With my client’s full consent, I’m sharing the story behind these photographs and the journey we went on together.
When you think of lip blush permanent makeup, you might imagine a straightforward treatment designed to add a little colour and definition to the lips. However, sometimes it can be about so much more.
My client previously experienced a highly traumatic dog attack, resulting in significant, life-changing injuries, particularly around her mouth. She required multiple surgical procedures and medical interventions to restore the structure and function of the affected area.
Although the reconstructive surgery achieved incredible results, some permanent changes remained, including pigment loss and reduced definition around her lips. This continued to affect her confidence, so she approached me to explore whether lip blush could help improve the appearance of her lips.
What followed was a treatment journey that was technically challenging, emotionally significant and incredibly rewarding

Can Lip Blush Be Performed on Scarred Lips?
When my client first contacted me, I knew this would be very different from a standard lip blush treatment.
There was scar tissue present, areas of pigment loss and a history of significant trauma to consider. Before agreeing to treatment, I needed to carefully assess her lips and understand what could realistically be achieved.
One of my main considerations was how the scar tissue might respond to permanent makeup pigment.
Scar tissue can behave differently from unaffected skin, particularly when it comes to pigment implantation, healing and colour retention. There can also be additional considerations around pigment migration and how the tissue may respond during and after treatment.
I also needed to assess the type and condition of the scarring, including whether there were any signs of keloid scarring. If I had felt that lip blush was unsuitable or that the risks were too significant, I would have declined the treatment.
Being completely honest about this was imperative, I explained my concerns, the potential risks and the limitations of what lip blush could realistically achieve.
Rather than simply saying yes or no, we arranged a consultation so we could assess everything properly before making a decision.
Consultation, Risk Assessment & Treatment Planning
During the consultation, we discussed the condition of her lips, areas of pigment loss, existing scarring and her desired outcome.
Because traumatised and scarred lips can respond differently to pigment and heal less predictably, a thorough assessment and tailored treatment plan were essential.
We discussed the natural vermilion border and the additional risks associated with working beyond it, including uneven pigment, colour changes and migration. Given the unique nature of this treatment, the aim was to carefully create a new lip shape while respecting the natural structure of her lips and addressing areas of pigment loss where the tissue allowed.
My client understood the potential risks and limitations and, following a thorough consultation, was happy to proceed.
Creating a Natural Lip Shape
One of the most important parts of the treatment was creating a shape that complemented my client’s natural features while working with the areas affected by her previous trauma.
Rather than trying to make her lips look completely different, I wanted to create balance and softness while strategically placing pigment where it was needed.
The aim was to work with what was already there and carefully address the areas of pigment loss and scarring.
This required a very considered approach, because every part of the treatment needed to take into account how the skin might respond during the healing process.
The First Lip Blush Treatment — Then the Waiting Begins

The treatment itself was technically challenging, but for me, the most difficult part came after.
Waiting for the lips to heal was a real whirlwind of emotions.
I knew that scar tissue could make the healing process less predictable, and naturally, I was anxious about how the pigment would settle.
I was completely honest with my client about the possibilities and limitations before we started, but that didn’t stop me from worrying while we waited to see the healed result.
Would the pigment retain?
Would the colour remain balanced?
Would the scarred areas respond differently?
These were questions that simply couldn’t be answered until the lips had healed.
The Lip Blush Top-Up
Once the lips had healed sufficiently, we could assess how the pigment had settled and decide how best to refine the result.
There were still some lighter areas, so during the perfection top-up I used a slightly darker pigment in those areas to help blend everything together.
The intention was for the colour to heal more evenly throughout the lips and create a softer, more balanced result.
Thankfully, the approach worked incredibly well.
The Final Result

Seeing the final result was incredibly rewarding.
The areas of pigment loss had been carefully addressed, while the overall appearance of the lips remained soft, natural and balanced.
But for me, the most important part wasn’t simply the visual result.
It was seeing how my client felt about it.
After everything she had experienced, seeing her confidence return was incredibly special and she kindly shared this review:
"Couldn’t be more thankful! Highly recommend you. Your care, compassion, kindness and professionalism. I now feel like I can smile again. Forever grateful to you."

More Than Just Lip Blush
This entire treatment journey was emotionally meaningful.
There were moments when I questioned whether I would be able to achieve what my client hoped for. I was conscious of the history behind the scarring, the potential challenges and the responsibility involved in working on an area that had already been through so much. However, it was because of this that I felt compelled to try.
Seeing her so happy with her healed result was incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I had played a small part in helping her feel more confident and comfortable with an area that had been through so much was a powerful reminder of why I love what I do.
Sometimes lip blush is about so much more than adding colour, it can be about making someone feel like themselves again.
In this case, it was about helping her feel like she could smile with confidence again
And that is something I will never take for granted.
For me, this wasn’t simply a lip blush treatment.
It was a reminder that sometimes the smallest changes can have a much bigger impact on how someone feels about themselves.
I’m incredibly grateful that she put her trust in me and let me share her story with you.
Considering Lip Blush After Facial Trauma or Scarring?
If you have experienced facial trauma, surgery or scarring around the lips and are considering lip blush permanent makeup, every case needs to be assessed individually.
Every client’s skin, history and healing process is different, particularly when previous trauma or scarring is involved. Scar tissue can respond differently from normal tissue, so a consultation is an important first step. It allows a thorough assessment and an opportunity to discuss your expectations, potential risks and limitations.
Every client and every healing journey is different. This case study and photos have been shared with the client’s full consent and is intended to demonstrate one individual treatment journey. It should not be taken as a guarantee of results for other clients with facial trauma or scarring.
